The Whitewater Canyon Catwalk is about 65 miles northwest of Silver City in the Gila National Forest. The Catwalk is 1.1 miles long, following the Whitewater River into the mountains alongside huge boulders, rapids and waterfalls. Originally built in 1890 as part of a gold mining operation, it was used by miners to reach the mines and bring slurry down to the mills. The Catwalk was rebuilt 3 times as a tourist site: by the CCC in the 1930's, in the early 1960's and in 2003 handicapped accessible ramps were added to the lower half mile. |
