The columns of rock forming City of Rocks State Park were spewed from a side vent in a gigantic volcano about 34.9 million years ago. The main cone of the volcano was located south of Lordsburg, over 100 miles away. It is thought that the dense rock columns took millions of years to form through erosion, wind and freeze/thaw action. These rocks rise as high as 40 feet and cover an area one square mile. Located north of Deming and southeast of Silver City, the park's elevation is 5200 feet. The lower right photo shows another volcanic formation in the distance. |
